Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Gules, in pale a winged cannon barrel muzzle to base Or, each wing charged with three gunstones, in chief on a bezant, a fleur-de-lis Azure.

Symbolism
The colors red and yellow are used for Artillery.  The winged cannon barrel-muzzle to earth-suggests artillery from the skies and alludes to the airborne nature of the organization.   The six gunstones represent six battle honors awarded the unit for service during World War II; the yellow disc and fleur-de-lis for service in Europe, also referring to the Battalions two decorations, the fleur-de-lis being blue for the Distinguished Unit Citation.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 516th Airborne Field Artillery Battalion on 8 November 1954.  It was redesignated for the 463d Airborne Field Artillery Battalion on 18 July 1956.
